Every piece of turquoise carries the fingerprint of the mountain it came from.
The blue you see on your wrist? It started deep underground—formed by copper, aluminum, phosphorus, and millions of years of silence. But not all turquoise is the same. The color, the matrix, the texture—all of it depends on where the stone was born.
At OresGreen, we believe knowing the origin of a stone is part of wearing it. So let's travel through three of the world's most legendary turquoise regions—and learn what makes each one unique.
1. Persia (Iran): The Blue That Defined an Empire
For over two thousand years, Persian turquoise has been the gold standard.
Mined from the deposits near Nishapur, in northeastern Iran, Persian turquoise is famous for its pure, sky-blue color—a blue so clear and even that it needs no matrix to prove its identity. This is the turquoise that traveled the Silk Road. The turquoise that crowned Persian shahs and decorated Ottoman mosques. The turquoise that gave the entire category its name: in Persian, "firouzeh"means "victorious."
Key characteristics of Persian turquoise:
• Pure sky blue, rarely veering into green
• Very little to no matrix
• Smooth, almost porcelain-like texture
• Highly valued for its uniformity
Persian turquoise set the world's expectations for what "fine turquoise" should look like. But here's the thing: perfection isn't the only kind of beauty. Some of us prefer stones with a story written across their surface.
2. Arizona, USA: The Sleeping Beauty and the American West
If Persian turquoise is about purity, American turquoise is about character.
The southwestern United States—particularly Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico—is home to dozens of turquoise mines, each with its own personality. But one name stands above all others: the Sleeping Beauty mine.
Located near Globe, Arizona, the Sleeping Beauty mine produced turquoise famous for its vivid, robin's-egg blue with almost no matrix. It was so consistent in color that it became a favorite of jewelry designers worldwide. The mine closed in 2012, making Sleeping Beauty turquoise increasingly rare and collectible.
But the American Southwest also gave us turquoise with bold, dark matrix—stones like Kingman, Morenci, and Bisbee. These stones wear their geology on the surface. The matrix isn't hidden. It's celebrated. Native American artisans have been working with these stones for centuries, treating the dark veins not as flaws, but as part of the stone's spirit.
Key characteristics of American turquoise:
• Wide range: from the matrix-free Sleeping Beauty blue to heavily-veined Kingman and Bisbee
• Often cut to show off unique matrix patterns
• Deeply tied to Navajo, Zuni, and Hopi jewelry traditions
• Many historic mines now closed, adding rarity value
At OresGreen, our aesthetic leans toward the American philosophy: the matrix is not a defect. It's the handwriting of the earth.
3. Hubei, China: The Sleeping Giant of Turquoise
Now, let's talk about the source that supplies much of the world's turquoise today—and the region closest to OresGreen's heart.
Hubei province in central China, particularly the Yunxi and Zhushan counties, is the world's largest producer of turquoise. The deposits here are extensive, and the variety is staggering. From sky blue to deep lake blue to greenish-blue, from almost no matrix to intricate spiderweb patterns—Hubei turquoise covers the full spectrum.
In Chinese culture, turquoise has been among the "Four Great Jade Stones" for thousands of years, alongside Hetian jade, Dushan jade, and Xiu jade. It was called the "Stone of Heaven" and reserved for emperors.
Key characteristics of Hubei turquoise:
• Incredible variety in color and matrix density
• Can rival Persian blue in its finest grades
• High density and excellent polishability
• Increasingly sought-after as Persian supply diminishes
At OresGreen, many of our stones trace their origins to this region. We work directly with suppliers who understand the land, the mines, and the miners. Every turquoise bead we use is selected by hand—not for "perfection," but for depth. For presence. For that quiet blue that feels like it's been waiting for you.
Why Source Matters
When you know where a stone came from, you wear it differently.
A Persian turquoise carries the weight of empires. An American turquoise holds the spirit of the desert. A Hubei turquoise connects you to the mountains where our story began.
At OresGreen, we don't hide our stones' origins. We celebrate them. Every bracelet in our collection is made with turquoise we can trace, select, and stand behind.
